Effective management of OT clients is sensibly carried out in several steps. The OT managers at Krombacher therefore planned to first create an overview of the existing OT clients. After that, the next necessary steps were to follow, such as creating backups, installing updates, and distributing software. They started with a product research and comparison of different vendors.
However, it quickly became clear to the OT team that it would not be purposeful to use a standalone tool for each of the already known use cases, as otherwise synchronization would be necessary and there would be an increased need for staff training.
Therefore, the OT team at Krombacher chose our tool ondeso SR, which combines the implementation of all use cases in one software. To be able to test the discussed functions of ondeso SR in a practical way, a PoC was arranged. The brewerys OT team, together with our ondeso consultants, carried out both the implementation and the rollout in a defined test environment.

In OT environments, there are many industrial PCs. Discover how you can securely and reliably manage these clients with ondeso SR.
After the smooth installation of the ondeso SR backend – consisting of a database and a file share – the first OT clients of the brewery could be installed quickly. As soon as the OT clients communicate with the ondeso SR database, the first inventory step is already completed, as extensive information on the installed hardware and software was directly determined and made available centrally.
Subsequently, it is possible to execute a wide variety of tasks on the OT clients via the execution of so-called „operations“. The next step, for example, is to create a backup operation specially adapted to the brewerys needs, which is used to perform regular, multi-level backups of the OT clients.
In the same way, it is also possible to provide the OT clients with operating system updates. It is also possible to combine the previously made backups and the subsequently performed update. Because, as always, the same applies here: „No backup, no mercy“. As a final use case, the installation of third-party software components could also be carried out successfully.

“Both the setup and the subsequent coordination for the detailed configuration of the operations were carried out smoothly in collaboration with the OT consultants from ondeso. We were able to successfully integrate our internal technical expertise and process knowledge,” said Marvin Bertram, OT network technician and system administrator at Krombacher.
Dirk Peter, Head of the OT Department at Krombacher, adds: “Thanks to the forward-looking planning of the ondeso SR PoC, the infrastructure used there can also be reused for production operations. This saves the otherwise time-consuming migration.” The flexibly designed operations will also allow for easy adaptation to additional plant components in the future.
Krombacher is enthusiastic and has no regrets about the decision to conduct the PoC, as the desired use cases can now be implemented as planned via a single software solution and put into productive use much more quickly. The brewery subsequently decided on the permanent use of ondeso SR, thereby retaining control over its OT clients in production.
